One of the best ways to help your children grow into mentally, socially and spiritually healthy adults is by working hard to have a good marriage. Like it or not your children are picking up their ideas of how men should relate to women and women to men by observing your marriage over the long haul. More than this, they are also taking strong mental notes about what it means to be a Christian by observing you. Nothing like living with someone 24/7, year after year to work out what their true priorities are and to see if their walk matches their talk.
So, husbands love your wives sacrificially and do what you can to help her be holy (Ephesians 5:25-28). Likewise, wives love your husbands (Titus 2:4) in a way that honours their role as head of the home (Ephesians 5:22-24).
You’ll mess up often, but actually how you deal with your sin and brokenness (hopefully through confession, repentance and forgiveness), will speak powerfully and persuasively to your children about the reality of God’s grace. As is often the case with learning, so with parenting, attitudes and priorities are more likely to be caught than taught.
So, mum and dad, for the sake of your children, think about what you can do to improve your marriage.
